My Roots
Chinese Family Name

As you may have guessed, although I might not bare the resemblance, I have a Chinese family name and share Chinese roots. This is due to the fascinating history of the Chinese Diaspora and the melting pot of the multi-ethnic society in tropical Suriname. At some point in time I would like to investigate deeper into the family tree to find out exactly which part from China our ancestors came from. So far I have only sketched out a few generations up until the last century, but who knows maybe someday I will find my lost family.

Although my roots and last name find its origins in Asia , being raised in the sunny Caribbean (switi sranan) has probably had the most influence on my upbringing. As such, I acknowledge and appreciate the eccentric contrast within me, from being reflective, introvert and reserved, to my outgoing, lively and playful alter ego.

Many have asked where I feel most at home and I have often responded with the indifference of being able to feel at home in many places of the world. Having said that I must absolutely highlight the fact that there is just no place like Suriname ! At the end of the day that's where my navel cords are buried (dape mi kumbate beri).
